Ingredients

For the Apple Fries
  • 2 large firm apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour (30g)
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch (8g)
  • Cooking Spray
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar (100g)
  • 1 1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 pinch Salt
For the Icing Glaze
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar (120g)
  • 2-3 tbsp Milk or Heavy Cream (30-45ml)
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer
  • 3 Mixing bowls

Method

Prepare Apples and Coatings
  1. Wash, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch (6mm) thick fries. Toss immediately with lemon juice in a bowl.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together flour and cornstarch. In a second dish, whisk together granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
Air Fry the Apple Fries
  1. Preheat air fryer to 380°F (195°C).
  2. Lightly dredge apple fries in the flour mixture, shaking off excess. Place in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  3. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray and air fry for 8-12 minutes, shaking halfway, until golden-brown and crispy.
Finish and Serve
  1. Immediately transfer hot apple fries to the cinnamon-sugar mixture and toss to coat thoroughly.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tbsp of milk, and vanilla extract to create the glaze. Add more milk if needed to reach a thick, drizzling consistency.
  3. Pile the warm apple fries on a plate, drizzle generously with the icing glaze, and serve immediately.

Notes

Don't Skip the Cornstarch: It's the secret to an audibly crispy coating.
Work in Batches: Overcrowding the air fryer will steam the apples instead of crisping them.
Coat While Hot: Tossing the fries in the cinnamon sugar while they are piping hot is essential for the coating to stick.
Adjust Icing Thickness: Add more powdered sugar to thicken the glaze, or a tiny bit more milk to thin it out.
