Prepare Apples and Coatings
- Wash, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch (6mm) thick fries. Toss immediately with lemon juice in a bowl.
- In a shallow dish, whisk together flour and cornstarch. In a second dish, whisk together granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
Air Fry the Apple Fries
- Preheat air fryer to 380°F (195°C).
- Lightly dredge apple fries in the flour mixture, shaking off excess. Place in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray and air fry for 8-12 minutes, shaking halfway, until golden-brown and crispy.
Finish and Serve
- Immediately transfer hot apple fries to the cinnamon-sugar mixture and toss to coat thoroughly.
- In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tbsp of milk, and vanilla extract to create the glaze. Add more milk if needed to reach a thick, drizzling consistency.
- Pile the warm apple fries on a plate, drizzle generously with the icing glaze, and serve immediately.
Notes
Don't Skip the Cornstarch: It's the secret to an audibly crispy coating.
Work in Batches: Overcrowding the air fryer will steam the apples instead of crisping them.
Coat While Hot: Tossing the fries in the cinnamon sugar while they are piping hot is essential for the coating to stick.
Adjust Icing Thickness: Add more powdered sugar to thicken the glaze, or a tiny bit more milk to thin it out.
